Ouarzazate desert tours-Erg chegaga allows you to see the southern morocco’s sceneries such as the Anti Atlas mountains, admiring a great views over the Morocco’s largest valley (Draa valley), and absorbing the atmosphere at the desert, while riding a camel through the Erg chegaga sand dunes, and watch a memorable sunset or sunrise on one of its highest sand hills.
Day 1 – Ouarzazate-Zagora-Erg chegaga (Camel Trek)
7:30 departure from your hotel ,and heading South towards Erg chegaga (desert Camel trek), we will mostly driving along the Anti Atlas Mountains, reaching the highest pass(1660 m), then drive down hill to join the city of AGDZ, from which we drive on the left banks, following the valley(Draa valley), through the ancient caravan route.
We will pause at the village of Tamnougalte: visit and have a glass of mint tea, continue crossing the other villages stretching along the way, after that, we will join the normal road which takes us to the town of Zagora (called: the gate to the desert), where we will be rewarded with one of the prettiest towns in Southern Morocco. Full of bright cerise bougainvilleas, pink oleander bushes, and palm trees.
Continue our drive until we arrive to Tamgroute, where you will be guided, and exploring the area, by visiting the library, under ground passage, and the place where they make traditional pottery.
After visit, we will head to the deep desert; we pause for at break at Oulad Driss village, and have lunch in one of its great hotels lying in the middle of sandy fields, then to M’hamid which ended this paved road, and drive for another (50km), through a sandy and stony track, which leads us to the Erg chegaga sand dunes.
Once you’re there, you’ll be greeted by a glace of tea, put your luggage inside your nomadic tent, and then go for a ride on the camel, to watch the most beautiful sunset on one of the highest sand dunes. Overnight in a nomadic tent.
After dinner, you will be invited around a campfire,enjoying a silence of the desert, relaxing, stargazing, while the nomads playing on their drums.
Day 2 – Erg chegaga to Ouarzazate
Your journey will start by an early wake up, to watch the amazing sunrise on one of its dunes, have breakfast, meet your driver and leave your camp by driving along the dunes, until we reach the Iriki: a dried lake which was full of water in the past (about 50 years ago), it was home for a large numbers of birds, and some wild animals such as: deer, desert foxes.
We will continue driving on a rocky path until we get to the town of Foum Zguid (almost 80km from where we started). We pause here for a break, and then keep driving along the Anti Atlas Mountains, passing through several small Berber villages following the valley, getting to Taznakht, which is famous for its green, yellow, red and white, geometric-patterned carpets, which have been woven here since ancient times. We pause here for a break, and have lunch in one of its local restaurants.
After lunch, we will get on the car and drive straight to Ouarzazate through the normal road, or by another which leads us to pass by Fint Oasis (this road is impassable during heavy rains). Getting to Ouarzazate in the late afternoon.
About Tamgroute
Tamgroute known throughout Morocco for its pottery; it was first made here in the 17th century by the Naciria Brotherhood.
As early the 11th century, Tamgroute has been an important religious and educational center near Zagora.
The surrounding villages, it boats several centuries-old mosques with distinctive blue earthenware tiled roofs and brilliant white minarets that dominate the skyline. The town became famous when its Sufi Medersa (university) was established in the 17th century, attracting students from great distances to study.
Tamgroute became the seat of the Sufi Brotherhood of the Naciria, an order that was respected in many parts of Southern Morocco. It was founded by the religious leader Sidi Mohamed ibn Nasser (1603-1675), who was instrumental in establishing the famous Zaouia Naciria Library in Tamgroute, one of the most important in Morocco. The holy man’s tomb lies near the medersa’s courtyard and forms the centerpiece of the annual Moussem of Sidi Mohamed ibn Nasser, held in his honor.
