ITINERARY
Your journey begins from Ouarzazate, via Ait Ben haddou: a world heritage site, declared by UNESCO in 1987. Once we get there, you will be surprised by a breathtaking landscape while stopping on a hill, from which you will have nice pictures before we go for a hike in order to explore this beatiful village.
From here, we drive to the next Kasbah:(Tamdakht Kasbah) which stands an impressive five stories high and has nine towers built into its formidable walls. A stroll around this area is highly possible for walk lovers. Afterwards we will continue driving along the Ounila valley with its small Berber villages built down the cliffs. On the way to Telouet, we will see some caves dwellings that have been discovered carved into hillside. The existence of the caves proved fortuitous for the Berber tribes; who for centuries have used them to hide from invaders.
We will pause for a break and have lunch where time allows it. Getting to Telouet, and visit the Kasbah. your journey will be ended by driving through a different road which take us up to the high Atlas Mountains. We wil join the road that connects Ouarzazate and Marrakech; and then drive for another 80km straight to Ouarzazate.
About Ait benhaddou
A fortified city or Ksar; Ait benhaddou lies around 30 km northwest of Ouarzazate on the banks of the Oued Mellah, overlooking the Ounila valley.
Founded in the 11th Century; though many of its buildings are younger. It was once an important place for merchants to rest and trade on the caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. Ait benhaddou is recognized as one of the most complete example of ancient pre-saharian architecture in the world; leading UNESCO to declare it a world heritage in 1987.
The ksar is a stunning sight with towers; red -earth houses set against the steep mountainside. It is laid out in traditional fashion: courtyards, homes, mosques and Medersa (university). Buildings are set around a center marketplace. There are sweeping panoramas from the fortress’s upper levels.
Immortalized in films such as the 1962 classic Lawrence of Arabia and 1977’s Jesus of Nazareth. Ait benhaddou is now a tourist attraction and films location, rather than a place for people to live.
A new village has been built for its former occupants on the opposite side of the river, and film revenues have helped pay for the fortress’s up keep.
