DAY TRIP FROM OUARZAZATE – ZAGORA DESERT

ITINERARY

07:30 am, your day trip from ouarzazate to Zagora, will start by heading South East.
During this journey, we will mostly driving along the Anti Atlas Mountains, reaching high pass(Tinifift: 1660 meters above the sea level) from where we will enjoy a great view over the mountains who lived volcanic periods in the past.

From here we will drive down hill to the city of AGDZ, from which we drive on the left bank, following the most largest valley in Morocco (Draa valley), and the former caravan route which was a link between North Africa and Morocco.

We will pause at the village of Tamnougalte, visit and have cup of mint tea. Continue crossing the other villages stretching along the way, before we join the normal road which takes us to Zagora, where we will be rewarded with one of the prettiest towns in Southern Morocco, full of bright cerise bougainvilleas, pink oleander bushes, and palm trees. 18 km further, we get to the town of Tamgroute, where you will be guided, and exploring the area, by visiting the library, under ground passage, and the place where they make traditional pottery.

From here, we continue our way to the first sand dunes that imported by wind (Tinfou Sand dunes), it is a single biggest hill on which you can climb to the top, from where you will be rewarded by a beautiful panoramic view.
Next to the dunes, there are camel guides offering rides on a camel, if you are interesting for a short ride for about 30 minutes or more.

Next, we will drive back to Zagora and have lunch in one of its beautiful restaurants stretching in the heart of the palm groves. Late afternoon, return to Ouarzazate by the same route.

ABOUT TAMEGROUTE

Tamgroute known throughout Morocco for its pottery; It was first made here in the 17th century by the Naciria Brotherhood.
As early the 11th century, Tamgroute has been an important religious and educational center near Zagora. Unlike the surrounding villages, it boats several centuries-old mosques with distinctive blue earthenware tiled roofs and brilliant white minarets that dominate the skyline.
The town became famous when its Sufi Medersa (university) was established in the 17th century, attracting students from great distances to study.
Tamgroute became the seat of the Sufi Brotherhood of the Naciria, an order that was respected in many parts of Southern Morocco.
It was founded by the religious leader Sidi Mohamed ibn Nasser (1603-1675), who was instrumental in establishing the famous Zaouia Naciria Library in Tamgroute, one of the most important in Morocco.
The holy man’s tomb lies near the medersa’s courtyard and forms the centerpiece of the annual Moussem of Sidi Mohamed ibn Nasser, held in his honor.
